Intro to Mosaics

from $55.00
Limit 10 per order

Combine the classical techniques of an ancient art form, AND lean into the exciting world of re-use art with this thorough introduction to mosaic making! In this two hour introduction, you will learn about different ways to design indoor mosaic creations, explore a variety of base materials, and learn the process of cutting/shaping, and laying your glass or tile as well as how to grout and seal your creation. Come with an idea, or leave inspired by our treasure trove of choices from our bin of studio treasures.

Participants will have the choice of a medium sized base (~6in square, but some rectangular options available) in the material and shape of your choice, or may design an assortment of smaller projects (coasters, or magnets). We will have bamboo, wood, fiberboard, or mesh available, but if you have a base you hope to design on, bring it along and we can see what we can do! Ideal bases for indoor pieces include wood, glass or ceramic dishes with a lip, or even jam jar lids which make great magnets! They key is that they are generally non-porous.

How is this class different from other studio offerings?:

This class is intended to give you a thorough understanding of the basics of mosaic making and will introduce you to a variety of ways to create with mosaics, including a variety of bases to work from for your project. Our classes are highly differentiated, and at the same time very beginner friendly. We hope that after your time with us, you are inspired to create on your own (or with us as studio members!) as this format of glasswork is super accessible, cheap, and easy to explore. Participants will have the choice to grout their project on site, or take home a grout kit after watching a demonstration if they choose to maximize their design time with us.

Includes:

  • All needed safety equipment and project materials.

  • 2 hours of instruction, modeling, and support.

  • One hand-made piece to take home with you! Or if you choose to dive deep with your design, a take-home grouting kit to finish up your design.

Additional Details:

  • Each participant must purchase a ticket, and complete the class waiver at check-out. If you are purchasing a ticket for a friend as a surprise, they can complete their waiver online here.

  • Beverages not included in workshop fee, but we have a wide variety of tasty local brews, as well as wine, juice, and coffee! Feel free to bring outside food, although we have lots of small snacks for munching too or frequent our neighbors at The Flying Pierogi (they’ll even walk it over to you).

  • Cancellations must be requested at least 48 hours in advance, and while we will always try our best to reschedule you, cancellations without the above notice or no-shows are non-refundable.

  • All classes take place at 101 Two Hills Drive Unit 180, Carrboro NC rain or shine!
