Introduction to Flameworking (Multiple Dates and Times)
$90.00

Get ready to turn up the heat and explore glass blowing at the smallest scale on our studio torch!

Flameworking, (also known as lampworking, or torchworking) refers to manipulating glass rods in front of a highly-controlled flame to create one of a kind works of glass art. In this class, you will learn basic flamework skills and design several small pieces that will be ready for pick-up after the class. That’s right…good things come to those who wait. Due to the high temperature of your art at time of creation, it will need to anneal (controlled cool) overnight in our studio kiln. Pick-up is generally available next day for Friday classes. Please see studio hours for available pick-up times. Shipping is also available for a small fee if you are visiting from out of town.

Skills introduced to the basics of flameworking include:

  • Understanding use of common flamework tools (like torches, mandrels, and shaping tools) and the types of glass (often borosilicate or soft glass)

  • Cutting, melting and fusing glass together with a torch

  • Drawing down or building up glass to create specific shapes

  • Working with a cold seal and punty

Includes:

  • All necessary safety equipment, glass, tools, and equipment provided.

  • 1 hour of individual instruction and support. Maximum class size of 2 participants.

Additional Details:

  • If registering for more than one person, please select back to back time slots for each participant. Additional times may be available upon request. Please reach out with any questions about scheduling to: sam@sayitwithglassdesigns.com

  • Each participant must register and complete the class waiver prompted at check out. If you are purchasing a ticket for a friend as a surprise, they must complete their waiver online prior to the class. Please note that participants who do not adhere to safety guidelines and appropriate dress will not be allowed to participate and will not be eligible for a refund. See specifics below.

  • Cancellations must be requested at least 48 hours in advance. We will always try our best to reschedule you.

  • All classes take place at 101 Two Hills Drive Unit 180, Carrboro NC rain or shine!

Important Safety Reminders for This Class:

Due to the nature of this class, please be aware of the specific safety requirements below that must be followed.

  • Always wear provided safety glasses. This is a studio requirement when cutting glass and using grinding equipment. Flamework class participants must wear the provided glare safety glasses at all times. Prolonged viewing of the sodium flare from the torch can damage eyes permanently. Specialized glasses will be provided.

  • Keep long hair tied back and do not wear articles of clothing or jewelry that hangs off the body.

  • Clothing with 100% natural fibers is recommended when participating in heat-related classes. (soldering and torchwork)

  • Do not wear open toed or open heeled footwear (i.e., flip-flops, sandals or clogs).  Full leg coverage is required for all flamework classes. A safety apron will also be provided.

  • Do not use any equipment without an instructor present.

  • Always use the studio torch with good room ventilation and air circulation. Our studio has a dedicated ventilation system for soldering and flamework gas removal.

Fusing Fridays Session (Multiple Dates)
$60.00

Looking for a laid-back creative activity to kick off your weekend? This is it! Join us most Friday evenings from 6-8 PM for this social class and learn the basics of glass fusing and enjoy designing a creation of your own! Glass fusing involves placing a variety of glass types together in a design, and then firing it in a specialized kiln to knit it all together. Please note, that your creation will be ready for pick up a few days after your session. You’ll receive a text notification from us when your art is ready. (We know…waiting is hard, but we promise it is worth it!)

Come with an idea or explore our examples of the amazing possibilities as you discover all that one can do with glass. (spoiler…it’s a ton!). In this class, you’ll learn the basics of fusing, as well as how to cut and shape your own glass to design your unique piece of art.

How is this class different from our other classes?

Unlike our DIY Art Bar option, this class is a little more hands-on when it comes to instructor support and you will also have the option to make a larger piece. This is a social class that invites others from the community to craft together. This class pass includes all instruction and materials needed materials for a medium sized “freeform” or “canvas” style project (or several small featured projects (plant stake, magnets, functional art, etc.).

Want to make something bigger? Just ask! We are happy to adjust your project pricing while in studio. For an additional fee, we are also able to turn most projects from a standard sun catcher, to night lights, magnets, or dishes/bowls.

Additional Info:

  • Waiver required for participation

  • This session is suitable for older kids (5th grade +) however, we do ask that you reach out and let us know if you plan on bringing a minor so that we can provide you with the appropriate waiver and ensure we can accommodate you.

  • All classes are held at our Carrboro Studio: 101 Two Hills Drive Unit 180, Carrboro

  • Local brews of all kind available for purchase in studio. Outside snacks welcome, or our friends at the Flying Pierogi are happy to walk some grub over to you.

  • Don’t see a date that works for you? Drop us a line and let us see what we can do!

Intro to Metal Came Construction (Multiple Dates)
$200.00

Unlike the copper foil or “Tiffany Method” (made popular by the Tiffany lamp), came work is most well known for its use in church windows, and other structures in need of weatherproofing and stability such as transoms and even doors.

In this full-day class, participants will learn the basics of not only glass cutting, but also how to construct a simple piece in this method. Unlike copper foil, which uses specialized tape adhered to glass pieces, this method uses metal channels to hold the glass in place, and requires only a little bit of soldering. (don’t worry, you still get to stare into the molten void some)

The best part (in our opinion) comes at the end, when the piece is cemented into its channels, making it more durable and weatherproof.

For this project, participants will choose from 2-3 studio patterns to create a medium sized hanging piece (approximately 9×9 inches depending on pattern). Pictured are just some of the available studio patterns. Have an idea or pattern request? Please reach out and we can see what we can do!

How is this class different from other studio offerings?

This class is a much deeper dive than our other classes, however all skill levels and abilities are welcome. This class will utilize original designs, and design support for those who have an idea for their design. You’ll receive more information upon registration. This class will incorporate cutting glass, grinding, learning to stretch and cut lead came, soldering, and application of lead came cementing. If you’re looking for a more thorough first introduction to glass, or for those have done a social class and are looking to expand your skills, then this one’s for you!

Includes:

  • All necessary safety equipment, glass, tools, patterns, instruction and hardware provided

  • 5+ hours of individual instruction and support in a small class size. We will begin at 10AM and work until around 3:30.

  • Your own finished piece to take home with you!

Additional Details:

  • Each participant must register and complete the class waiver at check-out. If you are purchasing a ticket for a friend as a surprise, they can complete their waiver online here.

  • Beverages not included in workshop fee, but we have a wide variety of tasty local brews, as well as wine, juice, and coffee! Feel free to bring outside food, although we have lots of small snacks for munching too or frequent our neighbors at The Flying Pierogi (they’ll even walk it over to you). Plan to stop for a brief lunch break on your own, half-way through the class.

  • Cancellations must be requested at least 48 hours in advance. We will always try our best to reschedule you.

  • All classes take place at 101 Two Hills Drive Unit 180, Carrboro NC rain or shine!
